The Four C’s of Diamonds

At Jewels by Alex, we understand selecting jewelry is complicated. We want our customers to know exactly what it is that they are buying so, let’s start at the beginning. The most basic component of jewelry education is understanding the “Four C’s”.

Carat

Carat weight is the only standard, objectively measured member of the Four C’s. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram, or .007 of an ounce. Jewelers utilize extremely precise and exact scales to weigh diamonds to hundredths of a carat. Each of these “hundredths” is referred to as a “point”. So, a one carat diamond is the same thing as a 100 point diamond just as a .50 carat diamond equates to a 1/2 carat or 50 pt diamond. Carat weight and diamond size are not the same thing. Size may actually be greatly affected by cut. Distance in millimeters across the top of the diamond has a huge impact on how big a diamond appears. Once a diamond is set in a ring, it is viewed from the top. Hence, diamonds that have a wider top diameter may seem bigger than stones with a higher carat weight but a smaller top surface area.




Unfortunately, much of a diamond’s natural carat weight is lost when it is cut and polished. Often a Gemologist’s decision of where and how to cut a particular stone must take optimizing cut, clarity and color into account, sometimes to the detriment of the final weight of a stone. “Magic size” refers to .5, .75, and 1 carat stones. Reaching these optimal numbers greatly impacts a stone’s value. For example, a stone that weighs .48 carats may be much less expensive than one weighing .50 carats even though they appear to be almost identical. Hitting a “magic” 1/2, 3/4 or 1 carat sweet spot can lead to a big difference in price.

Diamonds already set in jewelry cannot be weighed; so carat weight is estimated by measuring a stone’s outside dimensions. Appraisals or grading reports generally list carat weight measured under these conditions as approximate weight. If the jewelry contains multiple gemstones, the measurement is referred to as an approximate or estimated “total carat weight”.

In an historical aside, the origin of the term “carat” is quite interesting. Early Greeks used carob seeds as the base counterweight for weighing diamonds on balance scales. The carob seed’s weight was both light and predictable. The term “carat” is derived from the Greek word “keration” referring to this practice. Since then, the carat has become the international standard weight for diamonds as well as gold.

Choosing a Diamond with Carat Weight in Mind

Most diamonds sold today are less than one carat. In fact, the average diamond engagement ring is less than .50 carats. It’s simple to understand that the more a diamond weighs, the more it is going to cost. What most of us don’t realize however is that this cost increase is not proportional to the increase in weight. In fact, doubling the weight of a stone doesn’t double the cost… it can quadruple the price tag! One piece of advice is to stay just below the “magic size”. As discussed above, a .48 carat diamond looks pretty much like a .50 carat one, but can be quite a bit less expensive. Secondly, consider the cut when selecting a diamond. A well cut diamond may sparkle more and appear bigger than more expensive diamonds of higher carat weight.

It’s very important to consider who a diamond is being purchased for before making a decision. A buyer needs to consider finger size, the setting, and individual preferences. To some people, the size of the diamond matters most. If this is the case, clarity and color grades may be adjusted to meet budget requirements. Be aware of finger size. Large diamonds may be too big for small fingers. If you’re lucky enough to be buying a ring for someone with small hands, often medium or small diamonds will appear to be large on the wearer. Next, consider the setting when selecting a diamond. Not all settings will fit diamonds of all sizes. Finally, individuals have very unique tastes. Sometimes the best advice is to ask the person about his or her preferences before making a final selection.

Color

Ironically enough when selecting a diamond, it’s not color that makes the stone, it’s the lack of color. In fact, the value of the gemstone increases in correspondence with the decrease in color. A diamond’s brilliance is a result of how the stone reflects light. The clearer the diamond, the more the colors of the rainbow are reflected back to the eye. Because the human eye recognizes sparkle or light interaction before it detects color, diamond color is secondary to cut when rating particular gemstones. As a general rule, most natural diamonds have tints of yellow or brown although they appear to be icy white. Perfectly colorless diamonds are very rare and valuable.

Just to confuse you after making the above statement regarding the importance of lack of color when selecting a diamond, there are exceptions. Some colored diamonds, referred to as “fancy color diamonds” lie outside the yellow and brown color range. These fancy color diamonds may be pink or blue and are, in fact, highly sought after and valuable.


How is Diamond Color Graded?

Once upon a time, the diamond world used a variety of systems to grade diamond color. These early methods provided a variety of tiers and classified diamonds on scales ranging from A to C, from zero to 3, with roman numerals, and with word descriptions. Unfortunately, these early systems were not replicable or reliable. The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, decided to create a new industry standard color measuring system. The GIA chose to start their new rating scale with the letter “D” so as not to be confuse stones with ratings obtained utilizing earlier formats. The letter “D” came to signify absolutely colorless diamonds and applied to extremely rare stones. The scale concluded with “Z”, which was representative of stones with very noticeable color.

The GIA grading system divides its scale into five basic categories: D-F represents colorless diamonds: G-J, near colorless; K-M, faint yellow; N-R, very light yellow; and finally, S-Z, signifying light yellow. The difference between one letter and the next is extremely subtle. It takes an expert jeweler or gemologist with a high powered microscope to differentiate between levels as most differences cannot be detected with the eye alone. Grading is achieved by comparing a gemstone to diamonds of known color under exacting lighting conditions. Most people can visually detect the difference between diamond color and lack there of with several levels separating diamond samples. As a general rule, diamonds rated “J” or higher are colorless to the naked eye.

What is Diamond Florescence?

Some diamonds appear to change color when exposed to certain types of light, especially direct sunlight or under florescent light bulbs. This quality, called florescence, is a fascinating phenomenon. Scientists, in very technical terms, describe fluorescence as an emission of electromagnetic radiation light by a substance that has absorbed radiation of a different wavelength. For diamond lovers, the interesting part is that if the “absorbed radiation” is ultraviolet as well as invisible, the “emission” it creates is a colored light we can see. In fact, about 30% of diamonds have a blue florescence, even when the diamond appears to be colorless or yellow under natural light. The fluoresced color may also appear white, yellow, orange or even milky or oily. Diamond color grading reports indicate whether the stone fluoresces and also classify the strength of the characteristic as faintly, weakly, moderately, strongly or very strongly.

How Does Fluorescence Affect Diamond Value?

As with diamond color in general, yellow tinting adversely affects the value of a diamond. So, if a white diamond has a yellow florescence, its value falls; and conversely, if a yellowish diamond fluoresces white or blue, its value goes up. The important thing to note here is that before purchasing a diamond, the buyer needs to view the stone under multiple lighting conditions. Viewing the stone inside a store with florescent lighting may magnify the fluorescent quality of the stone. Blue florescence is considered to be an asset as it may mask yellow tints and increase a stone’s value.

Choosing a Diamond

Selecting a diamond is highly personal. Individual taste, culture, and financial considerations are very important. To the purist with unlimited funding, colorless diamonds of grade D to F are the preferred option. For those who need a better value but still want a diamond that appears colorless, stones with Grade levels G-J are perfectly fine. In fact, with a budget in mind, trading down the color level can allow the buyer to purchase a bigger stone or one with a better cut.

Clarity

In the most basic terms, Clarity means clearness. Natural diamonds are rarely perfectly clear. There are external blemishes, internal inclusions, and a myriad of other imperfections seen when viewing a gemstone under magnification. These impurities were developed when minute crystals were trapped within the diamond while it was being formed. To gemologists, clarity defines the degree of imperfection, or measures the size and number of impurities in a particular stone. A flawless diamond that contains no imperfections is so rare, that few jewelers have ever seen one. Since many of the imperfections discovered are invisible to the naked eye, Clarity actually has the least impact of the Four C’s on a diamond’s beauty. Visible defects on the other hand, have a great impact on value. As a rule of thumb, the greater the number and size of the impurities, the less is the stone’s value. All diamonds are unique because of these natural contaminants.


How is Diamond Clarity Graded?

As with the grading scales discussed with the carat, cut and color, a diamond’s clarity grading is not ideal. Diamond grading reports are created by humans, and as such, subjectivity always places a part in the evaluation. However, reputable labs utilize their expertise along with the GIA grading scale to provide the most replicable evaluation possible. Diamonds are evaluated under industry standard 10x power magnification.

Five basic characteristics are taken into consideration when grading Diamond Clarity: the size of the inclusion; the number of inclusions; the location of the inclusions; the possible effect of the inclusion on the diamond’s durability over time; and finally, the visibility of the inclusion.

The GIA Clarity Scale consists of 11 levels for grading diamonds. They are defined as follows:

F1 (Flawless) – A magnificent specimen totally free of blemishes or “inclusions” under 10x magnification

IF (Internally Flawless) – Without internal characteristics at 10x magnification, but with minor surface blemishes that do not penetrate the stone

VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included) – Having minute inclusions that are very difficult to see under 10x magnification

VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included) – Having minor inclusions ranging from difficult to see, to somewhat easy to see under magnification and on a white background

SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included) – Inclusions are easily recognized under 10x magnification when viewed on a white background and may be visible by the naked eye from the bottom (pavilion) of the stone

I1, I2, & I3 (Included) – Obvious inclusions that may be visible to the eye when the stone is face-up

Choosing Diamonds with Clarity in Mind

A valuable tool to use when selecting a diamond is the Clarity grading report which plots inclusions. Internal Inclusions are marked in red while external blemishes are indicated by the color green. Only primary imperfections are plotted with less significant ones being noted in comments. Markers or comments indicating the presence of “clouds” are not good as this may cause a dullness in the diamond’s appearance. Clouds that lower clarity values are only found in SI1 or lower graded stones. One very important thing to read in the grading report regards the “Nature” characteristic, or the inclusions affect on the durability of a diamond. Large feathering, depending on size and position within the diamond, has the potential to cause cracking. This is very rare but possible.

Keep in mind that only one out of a hundred people are able to detect VS2 inclusions. Second, note that after carat weight, Clarity has the most effect on a diamond’s price. Third, a diamond’s cut can impact a stone’s brilliance more so than its level of purity. Taking these factors into consideration is very important when selecting the diamond that is not only right for you, but one that falls within the price range you have in mind. The less flawed a diamond is, the more rare it is and the cost corresponds to the rarity. The fact that many of these flaws can only be seen under magnification is an important one to consider, especially when choosing from diamonds with an SI or higher rating. It’s critical to select a diamond that doesn’t have visible imperfections which mar the diamond’s beauty. The extent of the invisible imperfections on the other hand, is where the line between cost and quality considerations may be drawn.

Cut

Not to belittle the other 3 “Cs”, but Cut is probably the most important diamond characteristic as well as the most difficult to evaluate. Why does it top our list? It’s simple, the cut is what makes diamonds sparkle and that sparkle, unquestionably, is the “thing” that diamonds have that dazzles us. You could have a large, colorless, perfectly unflawed diamond but a poor cut could make the diamond twinkle less brilliantly than one of much lower quality. In fact, two diamonds of equal carat weight could have values that differ by as much as 50% due solely to the quality of the cut.


About Diamond Cut and Grading

A diamond’s cut is what produces the stone’s brilliant sparkle. Traditionally, diamonds are cut to produce 58 tiny facets, or flat surfaces, measuring only two millimeters in diameter. The expertise of the diamond cutter greatly effects the cleanest and sharpness of the cut and hence, the diamond’s light performance or refraction of light. In fact, its this precision cut that defines how the gem will produce the beguiling sparkle as light refracts from the stone to the eye. A finely cut diamond will appear very clear and fiery while poorly cut stones will seem dull and lifeless in comparison, regardless of the particular diamond’s innate qualities . The quality of the cut not only makes the stone sparkle more vividly, but it also may make the gem appear larger than stones of similar carat weight.

How is Diamond Cut Graded?

When a diamond is properly cut, light refracts from the top of the diamond In contrast, improperly cut diamonds loose light out of the bottom when the cut is too shallow and from the sides if the cut is too deep. Diamond cut has three basic characteristics: brightness, fire and scintillation. Brightness refers to the total amount of light that is reflected from the diamond. Fire indicates the dispersion of light into the color spectrum. Scintillation is a measure of diamond sparkle or how light flashes with movement. Unfortunately, all of these attributes are measured objectively making grading difficult and subjective.

In early 2005, the Gemology Institute of America or GIA unveiled a diamond cut grading system for standard round diamonds in the D-to-Z color range. The GIA created a way to rate diamond cut on a five tiered scale ranging from Excellent to Poor. This rating scale is dynamic, meaning that changes are still being made. Diamonds with a cut rating of Excellent are of the highest quality and reflect nearly all light that enters the diamond. Diamonds with an Excellent rating are rare and spectacular specimens. Lower ratings include Very Good, representing high quality cut diamonds; Good which while not quite as nice as the top rating diamonds, still allows light to pass through the gemstone; Fair, which is defined as a lesser gemstone that still allows some light to reflect; to finally, Poor, representing diamonds that are cut so inadequately that most light is lost through the bottom or sides of the gemstone.

Diamond Shape

Many people confuse cut with the shape of a diamond. Shape is the basic form of the diamond, meaning whether its round, square, tear shaped, etc. Cut, as explained above, is the precision cutting of the gemstone to create facets that reflect light. Round diamonds are the industry standards but shape is only limited by the skill and imagination of the diamond cutter. Diamonds that are not round are known as fancy cut diamonds. Popular cuts include princess, marquise, emerald (square), oval, pear and heart-shaped diamonds. Other unusual shapes including triangles can also be found.

Pricing Policy

Should any pricing or copy errors occur on this or any third party website operated by or on behalf of Jewels by Alex, we reserve the right to correct them. We strive to maintain an accurate price representation for all products represented herein. Price discrepancies, as the result of technical or human error, will not be honored.

Sale Price Adjustments

Sale price adjustments must be made within 7 days of the original ship date unless otherwise specified. Price adjustments will be provided as store credit.

Cancel or Change an Order

If you would like to change or cancel an order please call Jewels by Alex at 844-999-ALEX. We will attempt to accommodate order changes to the extent possible prior to shipping confirmation. Some changes will result in a shipping delay. We are unable to accommodate changes or cancellations on special order requests and/or orders that have already shipped. If your order has already shipped, please contact us to set up a merchandise return once you have received the shipment.

Sales Tax

Sales tax is determined by the zip code to which you are delivering your order, and is calculated based on the total cost of your order. There is no tax charged for orders delivered outside of Pennsylvania.

Quality Control

All products are carefully inspected by us when they are received from our vendors or custom made from our in-house jeweler. We verify that each item meets the exacting quality standards that we have set for that product. Our quality control team will again inspect your order prior to shipping to insure the product still meets these standards after having been sized or custom ordered.

Order Processing

Order processing includes credit validation, name and address verification and fraud protection screening for your security. We also provide free gift wrapping and will include a gift message free of charge if you have selected these options. Order processing also includes sizing and special ordering if required. Once these steps are complete, your order is ready for final inspection and packaging.

Orders not requiring sizing or special ordering will be processed as follows:

Orders placed before 12:00 PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday will be processed the next business day

Orders placed after 12:00 PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday or on Saturday, Sunday or holidays, will be processed within the next two business days.

Orders requiring sizing or special ordering will be processed as follows:

Standard sizes for most rings are size 6-6 1/2 for women and 9-10 for men. To request a ring in any other size can add up to 5 business days to the total delivery time. Your confirmation email will have all the necessary time frames for your delivery.

Some ring materials, such as stainless steel, titanium or intricately carved or engraved rings must be special ordered, for non-standard sizes. The additional time that will be added to the total delivery time in your confirmation email.

Shipping and Delivery Options

We can ship your gift via Express Delivery to get it there quickly for a fast-upcoming special occasion, or we can work with you to get your order shipped to your work or other location that is not your home billing address to help you maintain your surprise. If you will not be home to sign for your order, we can ship your order to your place of work, or another more convenient destination. Here are your options:

Ship to an alternate address that you have pre-registered with your credit card company

As a convenience to customers who wish to ship valuable items to addresses that are not their home billing addresses while still protecting against fraud, most credit card issuing banks allow their customers to register these alternate addresses in advance. To help expedite your order, simply call your issuing bank first before shopping from our web site and provide them with your desired alternate shipping address..

Once you place an order for over $150 and choose a shipping address other than your billing address, we will be able to automatically confirm that your credit card or financing company has this alternate shipping address, such as your place of work, on file, and rapidly process your order.

Ship to an authorized, staffed UPS Customer Center

If you cannot be available or have some other trusted adult available to sign for your package, you can have it shipped to the most convenient UPS center so that you can sign for and pick it up at your leisure. Find the address of the staffed UPS Customer Center nearest you.

Importer of Record

When ordering from Jewels by Alex, except for shipments to the U.A.E. and China, the recipient is the importer of record and must comply with all laws and regulations of the destination country. Title and risk of loss for items ordered will transfer to the recipient upon delivery to the common carrier in the United States. For shipments to the U.A.E. and China, title and risk of loss for items order transfer to the recipient upon pick up or delivery in the U.A.E. and China.

Prior to delivery to the recipient, the shipment may be subject to the customs fees, import duties, taxes, and other charges of the destination country. These charges are always the recipient’s responsibility. For further details, read about Customs, Duties and Taxes.

Items eligible to be shipped under our international shipping policy are based on the destination country.

International Shipping

For shipments destined for Australia, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mexico, New Zealand, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Taiwan and US Virgin Islands, all products on our U.S. Web site are eligible.

All international orders will be shipped, with no additional charge, via UPS International or FedEx International Priority®. Asset Protection

Asset Protection will be provided by a premier global insurance company for all orders shipped internationally. A fee of 0.20-0.30% of the value of your order will be applied during the checkout process, except for orders to the U.A.E. and China. This protects your order from the time it leaves Jewels by Alex to when it arrives at your door. This policy is an agreement between the customer and the insurance company. Details about the insurance company and claims process will be provided to you, following your purchase, in your order confirmation email. Customs, Duties and Taxes

The customs office of the destination country may impose customs fees, import duties, taxes, and other charges to your international order where applicable. These additional charges required for customs clearance are the responsibility of the recipient. When your order arrives at customs either our shipper, FedEx, UPS or the customs office will contact you directly to arrange for the payment of any charges that may be due. In some circumstances FedEx/UPS is required to pay certain duties and taxes, in advance, on a customer’s behalf. For instance, FedEx/UPS may pay an advance fee when countries require that duties and taxes be paid prior to customs release or prior to certain items clearing customs. In these instances, FedEx/UPS will assess an Advancement Fee surcharge that will be billed to the party designated to pay duties and taxes.

Please be advised that Jewels by Alex has no control over these charges. The actual amount charged by customs may differ from the rates below. Country of origin information for your order can be provided by contacting us at sales@theluxuryjeweler.com to help assist in estimating import duties. International Payment Methods

Financing Programs: The Jewels by Alex credit card is available for residents of the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands for purchases made in US dollars.

We do not accept payments made in cash, by check, ACH, or debit cards without the Visa or Mastercard logo requiring use of a PIN. For orders shipping to Mexico, payment may be made using bank wire only. There is a 1.5% discount for payments made via bank wire. We reserve the right to request additional information about your payment method or identity before your order can be processed.

For orders shipping, to China we offer the following payment methods:

Bank Wire / Telegraphic Transfer (TT): Bank wire is the fastest and easiest way to pay for orders shipping to China. The standard 1.5% discount for bank wire payments does not apply to orders shipping to China.

Shipping Information, Method & Limits

Jewels by Alex will ship any order under $25,000 to an APO, FPO, or DPO address. We ship all APO/FPO orders via USPS Priority Mail to the appropriate APO/FPO processing center then via the military postal service and shipment tracking is not available for APO/FPO addresses. For security purposes, USPS will not show a delivery scan or in transit scans for packages sent to these addresses.

Estimated Shipping Times

Jewels by Alex guarantees your package will arrive at the appropriate APO/FPO processing center within 2-4 business days. Most shipments usually arrive to you within a total of 5-10 business days. However, some orders may take up to 20 business days to arrive. If you are already familiar with sending packages to APO & FPO addresses, your Jewels by Alex order is likely to arrive in about the same amount of time.

Insurance

As with all Jewels by Alex orders, your shipment is insured from the moment it leaves our door until it arrives at yours.

Sales Tax Information

Because APO/FPO addresses are considered domestic, no taxes or duties are due on orders shipped to them. If an order is shipped directly to a base, rather than through the APO/FPO system, however, taxes and duties would be applicable. Jewels by Alex will include all required tax documentation with your order.

“If I’m in a hurry to get my shipment, can I send it to my local address instead of using the APO address?”

You may ship orders directly to your local U.S. base address, subject to military restrictions, for faster delivery times. Any international shipments sent to a non-APO/FPO/DPO address are subject to the local country’s duties and taxes.

Return Policy

For items purchased at Jewels by Alex, please refer to your printed receipt as the return policy may vary based on the item(s) purchased. If you are unable to locate a copy of your receipt, you may contact us for more information.

For items purchased on theluxuryjeweler.com, returns are accepted within 10 days and exchanges within 15 days of the delivery date. Merchandise must be in new unused condition with all tags still attached in the way it was received from us. All returns require the original sales receipt or packing list, or a copy. Returns will be credited in the original form of payment. For your convenience, purchases made on theluxuryjeweler.com, can also be returned to the store.

Your return must come with a Return Merchandise Authorization form. You will only pay for return shipping and insurance fees. To receive a return authorization on orders shipped within the United States follow the steps outlined below.

Please note that to be eligible for return, items must be in their original purchase condition, include all product documentation, and shipped within 10 days.

To expedite exchanging for different product, we recommend returning for refund and placing a new order. Please allow approximately 2 weeks for your refund to be processed.

If a package or item delivered to you arrives damaged, please refuse the shipment or call us immediately at 1-844-999-ALEX. Please retain all packing materials unless instructed otherwise by The Luxury Jeweler. Claims for damaged or missing items must be reported immediately or within 5 days of receipt of your order. Single Jewelry Items $500 or Less:

Individual items of $500* or less being returned for refund can be set very easily. Request a Return Merchandise Authorization code and if you’d like, we can send you a insured return shipping label which will be deducted from your refund. It’s that easy!

Online Returns do not apply to the following items:

• International returns.

• Non-USD currencies.

• Item(s) shipped over 10 days ago.

• Individual purchases over $500.

• Exchanges, repairs, or resizing.

• Items that became damaged or defective after delivery.

Single Jewelry Items $500 or More:

Please call us at 844-999-ALEX, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for individual items over $500, and items for exchange, repair, resize, or to report damage or defect. We recommend that you securely package your items in original packing materials, fully insured. We are not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

Returns are processed during weekdays once the items have been received at our store. Following receipt of your returned item, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Please allow an average of 1-2 weeks for full processing. We will review the returned item. Items that show signs of wear or have been altered, resized (by a jeweler other than The Luxury Jeweler), or damaged cannot be accepted for return. Please allow another 7 – 10 days after processing for your bank to post credit against your account.

Non-Refundable Items

Engraved jewelry items other than rings may not be returned. All The Luxury Jeweler engraved rings may be returned for credit, however engraving fees are non-refundable. Special orders are final sale and are not eligible for return. Returns without a The Luxury Jeweler return code, returns sent C.O.D., and improperly or uninsured packages will be refused upon receipt. Returns with missing paperwork or product will not be processed.

How to Return or Exchange at the Store

For your convenience, all theluxuryjeweler.com purchases can also be returned or exchanged at the store. To return or exchange an item, simply bring it in along with the original packaging and paperwork, and we will be happy to assist you.

International Returns

Additional shipping charges may be incurred if packages are returned via alternate carriers (including, but not limited to, UPS and Canada Post). The Luxury Jeweler reserves the right to charge your credit card for any fees we incur at time of package receipt. To avoid additional charges, we recommend sending your return via our preferred G4SI insured FedEx carrier.

For orders shipping to China, the 10 day period begins on the date you receive your order. The 20-30% reservation fee is non-refundable.

How to Prepare a Return or Exchange

To return a diamond or jewelry item to The Luxury Jeweler, follow the below process:

Your Return Authorization Code. Individual items of $500 or less, returned for refund can be set up by calling 1-844-999-ALEX and you will be given a Return Authorization Code. For all returns, write this code on the return sticker found at the bottom of your original invoice. Place the sticker on the outside of the box you are returning.

Package Your Return. We recommend you use the original shipping box, including all original packaging and collateral material. If your item was delivered with a diamond certificate and that certificate is not returned, you will be liable for the $250 replacement cost. For security reasons, do not write The Luxury Jeweler anywhere on the outside of the box.

Insure Your Package. On your invoice, if the price of the item you’re returning is listed as:

$500 or Less: Within the U.S. you can ship your package via any carrier. Call us to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) and if you’d like, we will print & send to you a prepaid FedEx Ground® label for your order on qualified items. This fee will be deducted from your refund.

Over $500: We recommend you ship your package via US Postal Service insured for the total value of the contents. If you wish, you may request a return receipt at a nominal fee that alerts you once The Luxury Jeweler has received your shipment. On shipments of $1000 or more, we recommend using US Postal Service Registered Mail™ for optimal tracking capability. (FedEx® will not insure merchandise over $500 and UPS® will not insure merchandise over $1000).

More than $25,000: High value returns often require special arrangements. We recommend contacting a The Luxury Jeweler for assistance and suggested methods for returning your purchase.

PayPal Returns

PayPal orders may be returned for credit back to your PayPal account. Please allow up to 2 weeks for your account to be credited.

Shipping Charges

Shipping charges, including Special Handling and any other related costs, are non-refundable. Please do not ship returns C.O.D. If you receive any portion of your order damaged, please contact us prior to returning the items. The Luxury Jeweler will not reimburse you for unauthorized shipping expenses incurred. Please retain all shipping materials for FedEx/UPS pick up and/or inspection.

If we request that you return the merchandise to us, we may reimburse you for full or partial return shipping expenses at our discretion. We will not reimburse you for overnight, express or other special services used at your discretion.

After Your Return is Received by The Luxury Jeweler

Once your return is received into our system, you will receive a confirmation email. System processing occurs Monday through Friday. Please allow our team one business day, up to 24 hours, once the carrier arrives to receive product into our system. Failure to obtain a Return Authorization code, or include Diamond Grading Report(s) can delay receiving your return.

Once entered into our system, your return must be inspected by us. Please allow 2-4 business days for this process. If there are any questions regarding your return, we will contact you. Once inspection is complete, your return will be fully processed. For refunds, please allow an additional 2-4 days.

If you are expecting a return shipment, you will receive a shipping confirmation the day of the outbound shipment. You can track the status of your return online.

Credits to Your Charge Card

Credit card purchases, The Luxury Jeweler Credit Card and PayPal purchases will be refunded against the credit card or account used on the original purchase. Please allow up to 2 weeks from the date that The Luxury Jeweler has received your return for your account to be credited. You may wish to contact your credit card company on posting guidelines as they can vary. If you made a purchase of $1000 or greater using a bank wire, and are an International customer, your refund will take approximately 3 weeks from the date of the return’s receipt. For bank wire purchases under $1000, please allow 3-4 weeks. Bank wire refunds are posted against the original account they originated from.
